Don had a radio plugged into Chicago’s popular station and knew the beat and vibe of the time. The’ 70s arrived and like any teenager he began developing his own musical tastes. Legends like Seger, Springsteen and Joe Cocker were more than favorites; they were legends. They were the sounds that shaped his taste. As Don moved through life, his interest in music only increased. Jamming with his bandmates, doing covers and eventually writing original songs became his passion. This band was more than a phase: it was his life’s soundtrack. Don’s story is as much about lifelong friendships as the songs themselves; He and his old bandmates still write and record together, making honest music.

The Early Years

Throughout family gatherings and musical performances, Don Sprik was exposed to an environment which encouraged creativity. Quickly he was making his own musical discoveries on a transistor radio plugged into WLS in Chicago, playing uninterrupted hits of the day. His family musical instincts definitely influenced him; he was influenced by them. His dad sang in a gospel quartet and at times brought his mom together for a duet. These moments offered a musical background to Don’s upbringing which was difficult to ignore. As the youngest of six, he had sisters who played their 45s continuously. The records shuffled bands including the Beatles and artists like Janis Joplin which turned into part of his own playlist as he watched. In his living room with stacks of records, Don would let the tunes wash over him, building a respect for songwriting. These experiences set the scene for his subsequent years for his path of music. From gospel to rock, it all formed the basis for his lengthy musical journey. Whether singing along or analyzing the melodies, Don’s early years had been defiantly filled with sounds that would influence his future musical endeavors. Those early days of musical discovery shaped each song he would create and sing in the long term.

The Transition to Original Music

Like many young adults determining their next steps after high school, Don Sprik found himself at a crossroads. Enticed by other paths, he could not resist the call of music. A spirit of adventure and a guitar in hand, he started working with friends who also liked writing original tunes; it was a fun time where creativity was a free flowing and every jam session was something unique. This group (soon called Freewheelin) included Jimmy Warren on lead guitar, Jon Jarecki on bass and Al Arkesteyn on drums. Together they explored sounds, not simply coverings, but creating music which spoke to their very own dreams and experiences.

The journey was more than learning chords or a melody. It was about community and sharing passion. Sprik started out with these friends and the flame never faded. Studio sessions were particularly thrilling and started Sprik on a lifelong love affair with recording.
